Francis Marion Ratts, Son of Andrew Ratts & Celia Wright, born 24 February 1833. Died 15 October 1895. Francis Marion Ratts started the Livery Stable and Tavern one block south of the present Ratts Tavern on the Square in 'Salem, Ind. His Wife Mary operated a Milinary Shop in the building that now houses the Tavern on the Square. Francis Marion was a Republican Leader, and believed strongly in Education. He worked hard to educate his children. One son became a Dentist and one became a Professor of Law at Indiana University. After his wife Mary (Cooper) Ratts died, he married Martha Gibner. Three of his sons changed their last name to Rhetts in the 1890's. He first married Mary Ann Cooper, daughter of John Cooper & Mary Ann Morris, 23 December 1852. Born 26 October 1835. Died 27 September 1885. He second married Martha Gibner.
When Mary Ann COOPER was born on October 26, 1835, in Washington County, Indiana, her father, John, 43 and her mother, Mary, 41. She married Francis Marion RATTS and they had five children together between 1853 and 1866. She died on September 27, 1885, in Salem, Indiana, at the age of 49, and was buried there.

26 Oct 1835 Mary Ann Cooper born in Washington County, Indiana, the youngest of 3 children. Her parents were John H Cooper and MaryAnn Morris. Father John H Cooper listed in the 1830 Federal Census in Washington County, Indiana.


2 Aug 1838 Francis Marion Ratts granted land the northwest quarter of the southeast quarter and the northeast quarter of the southwest quarter of Section twelve, in township one north, of Range three East in the District of lands subject to sale at Jeffersonville IN


1840 Federal Census for Jackson Township, Washington County, Indiana. Francis is listed a male between 5 and 10 years of age under entry for father Andrew Jackson Ratts. Mother and sister also listed.


20 Jun 1846 Father Andrew Jackson Ratts mustered in the 2nd Regiment Indiana Volunteers in New Albany, Indiana as a Sergeant in Company D commanded by Capt. Aberham Dennis. He mustered out 23 June 1847 at New Orleans, Louisiana.


14 Aug 1848 Father Andrew Jackson Ratts died in Jackson Township, Washington County, Indiana. His tombstone says 15 March 1847 (37 years, and 29 days), however he was still in military service on that date. Will dated this date.


1850 Federal Census for Washington Township, Washington County, Indiana. Listed with Mary Ann Cooper’s father John age 57, mother Mary age 56, brother Alford age 24. She is listed as age 14.


1850s-70s Date not known, Francis opened Frank Ratts Feed and Trade Stable & Centennial Saloon one block south of Ratts Tavern on the Square on the Salem Square.


23 Dec 1852 Francis Marian Ratts (age 19) and Mary Ann Cooper married in Washington County, Indiana. His parents were Andrew Jackson Ratts and Celia Wright. Her age 17.


27 Sep 1853 Daughter Maria Antoinette Ratts born in Washington, Indiana; married John L Sullivan 7 Mar 1885 at Floyd, IN


18 Jan 1855 Son Wllliam Albert Ratts (later Rhetts) was born in Salem, Washington, Indiana; married Emily Jane McKinney on 27 Sep 1883 at Washington, IN


1860 Federal Census for Washington Township, Washington County, Indiana. Francis listed at head of household, age 36; wife Mary A age 34; Maria A age 6; William A age 5, Frank age 5/12; and Mary Ann Cooper age 67. He is listed as a farmer with $2,600 in real estate and $1,000 in personal property.


13 Jan 1860 Son Francis Emmett was born in Salem, Washington, Indiana; married Tabitha Anna Stuart on 5 Mar 1871 at Washington, IN


19 Jul 1863 Son John Edward Ratts (later Rhetts) was born in Salem, Washington, Indiana; married (1) Anna C. Williams on 8 Oct 1885 at Washington, IN; (2) Nellie Bowman on 20 Aug 1900 at Washington, IN; and (3) Effie D Maupin on 2 May 1907 at Louisville, Jefferson, KY


Jun 1863 Civil War Draft Register. Listed as age 33, married and owner of livery stable in Washington Township, Washington County, Indiana.


1865 IRS Tax Liability Report shows Francis of Salem, Indiana, as owing $10.00 in taxes. Occupation listed as ??Keotia Restabl


28 Nov 1866 Son Charles Andrew Ratts (later Rhetts) was born in Salem, Washington, Indiana; married Harriet Casper on 25 Jan 1893 at Washington, IN.


15 Jul 1870 Federal Census for Washington Township, Washington County, Indiana. He is listed as age 38 and keeper of livery stables. Value of real estate was $1,600 and personal property valued at 3,000. Census also includes: wife Mary A. age 34 (Milliner); Maria A. age16; William A. age 14; Francis M age 12; John E. age 7; and Charlie age 4. Mary Cooper also in household age 75. Also listed are Martha Gibner age 28 (Millinar) and George Brickney age 27 (Hosteler).

3 Jun 1880 Federal Census for Salem, Washington County, Indiana. Francis listed as age 47, saloon keeper. Also listed were: Mary A, wife age 44; Mary A Cooper mother age 83; Maria Ratts daughter age 26; William A, son age 25; laborer; Francis E. son age 20, bookkeeper; Edward, son age 16, at school; Charlie, son age 13, at school; and Hattie Ratts, grandchild age 6, at school


27 Sep 1885 Mary Ann Cooper died age 49 in Salem, Washington, Indiana. Obit says she was age 55 at her death.


3 Oct 1885 Salem Leader: Obit Saturday, October 3, 1885. Mrs. Mary A., wife of Frank Ratts, after a protracted illness of several weeks of typhoid-malaria and flux, died Sunday night at 9 o'clock in her 55th year. The funeral took place Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock p.m., conducted by Rev. Giles, of the Baptist church, after which the remains were interred in Crown Hill cemetery.


11 Sep 1886 Francis Marian Ratts married Mattie A. Gibner, of Croydon, Indiana, age 39 (born in Washington County, Indiana), daughter of Jacob Gibner and Eliza Thomas, in Harrison, Indiana, at residence of Wm. C. Wright. License dated 10 Sept 1996; marriage on 11 Sept 1886.
